EQ2 Child's Play Promotion Raises $20K
|
By purchasing a virtual Child's Play item using SOE's in-game Station Cash players managed to raise $20,000 for the Child's Play 2009 Winter Charity Drive.
Hosting a month-long fundraising campaign to support the charity, SOE pledged to donate $10 each time an EverQuest or EverQuest II player bought a Child's Play virtual item in the MMORPG's marketplaces.
"The ability of our players to make a donation of this magnitude in these tough economic times is beyond anything we could have hoped for," says SOE president John Smedley. "As we continue to diversify with programs like Station Cash we will be able to offer unique items that benefit not only our players, but other partnerships and organizations such as Child’s Play in this case."
Child's Play is a charitable organization founded by the authors of the popular computer and video games-based webcomic Penny Arcade that organizes worldwide toy drives to children's hospitals. Mike Krahulik and Jerry Holkins founded Child's Play in 2003 to improve the lives of sick children by donating toys and games to hospitals worldwide.
The charity is also seen as a way to refute mainstream media's perception of gamers as violent and antisocial. Through Child's Play, donors have sent over four million dollars in toys, games and books to children's hospitals all over the world.
Last year, the Child's Play charity raised $1,434,377 for the 2008 season. |
