| Windows 8 Preview Is Over 9000! |
Microsoft's Building Windows Twitter account, @BuildWindows8 reports today that:
| Quote:: |
| One day later...one million downloads of the consumer preview |
Even if that's not a million individuals each running Windows 8, that's an impressive accomplishment. By comparison, the Developer Preview received more than 3 million downloads while that program was in effect.
The Windows 8 Consumer Preview is available for download at preview.windows.com. |

| Windows 8 Consumer Preview Coming February 29 |
Microsoft today sent out invites for a February 29th Mobile World Congress event that will see the launch of its Windows 8 Consumer Preview.
Details are still scarce, but the expectation is that day the Consumer Preview will be available for download, surplanting the currently-available Developer Preview, and demonstrating a more feature-complete beta of the new operating system slated for release in October of this year. |

After three years of dealing with Vista's (partly undeserved) unpopularity, Microsoft this week launched its new operating system, Windows 7. As a way to mend Windows' reputation, Microsoft is marketing Windows 7 as an operating system with the consumer in mind. It builds on the “I'm a PC” campaign with the tagline “I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea.” It includes a print advertising, online efforts, and a PR campaign.
The new version of Windows offers a streamlined user interface and new features aimed at making everyday tasks easier and allowing people to get the most out of their computers.
Some of the more prominent Windows 7 features include:
- Taskbar: The taskbar has been completely redesigned to help users work smarter, cut clutter, and get more done, with features such as thumbnail previews of webpages, documents and running video.
- HomeGroup: Users can easily share their files and printers with other PCs running Windows 7 in their home.
- Windows 7 Device Stage: This shows the status of all connected devices such as cameras and mobile phones, and makes it easier to synchronise and manage them.
- Snap: Users can drag an open window to the screen's border to automatically re-size it. Two different windows can be snapped to the left and right borders for a perfect comparison.
- Shake: Users can click on a window pane and shake the mouse to minimise all other open windows, then shake the pane again to restore the windows to their original sizes.
- Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker: These products are available via an optional download and offer customers free options to edit photos and videos and easily share them.
- Faster on and off: A focus has been made on underlying performance, faster startup, resuming and shut down time, and enhanced power management.
Lifehacker's Complete Guide to Windows 7 covers pretty much everything you might want to know about what's new (and desirable) about Microsoft's new operating system, as well as helpful tips and addons.
The new operating system comes in three home editions: Home Premium and Ultimate editions for most new PCs, and a Starter edition for the low-cost, ultraportable netbook and nettop computers. A Professional edition has also been released for corporate upgrades, replacing Vista Business.
Further information on the Windows 7 release can be found on the Microsoft Windows 7 website: www.microsoft.com/windows7. |

| Windows 7 Limited Pre-Order Starts Today |
Microsoft just laid out the Windows 7 pricing grid, and here's the information: Vista and XP users will be paying $119.99, $199.99, or $219.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate upgrade. Full retail copies will run $199.99, $299.99, or $319.99 respectively.
It's not quite that simple, though: starting today, June 26, and ending July 11 (or while supplies last) you'll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices - $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional. However, pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly.
Pre-orders are being taken now at quite a few retailers, including Newegg and Amazon.
It's not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap and/or free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after today with Vista as well. |

Service Pack 2 for Windows XP has been released to manufacturers (RTM), is available to MSDN customers, and will soon be available to all via Windows Update and Microsoft sites. At 272391 KB, the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers download is big, and Microsoft will be offering the option of getting it on CDs.
The much awaited Service Pack comes with many security updates (new NX and DEP protection), extra features (firewall, security center), and improvements for Windows. New versions of IE and OE come with the release, as well as improvements in the wireless networking field. So far, the service pack seems to be very stable (no known major issues) and does seem to speed up most systems. |

| Microsoft: SP2 Will Not Install on Pirated Copies of XP |
Contrary to some reports, Microsoft confirms that Windows XP SP2 will not install on systems running known pirated copies of Windows XP. |
