Merry Christmas from The Clenched Fist!

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the server / All things "Working As Intended," activity hardly a murmur. / The backpacks were hung by the dragon's lair with care, / In hopes that PHAT LEWTS soon would be there...

As the year nears its end, The Clenched Fist Guild would like to wish its members and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Although the past year has had its ups and downs, we've seen a lot of great activity in the Guild, with the addition of new members, as well as the return of old friends. We've also had great experiences with our Alliance partners, with many new encounters defeated and countless epics and shard armor sets completed.

Also, the Guild has reached a new milestone in its own progress, largely thanks to the effort of many Heritage Quest seekers and one obsessive Ranger. In a very short amount of time, the Guild has risen to Level 70, an impressive accomplishment given our very small size.

I hope everyone enjoys their holidays, and I look forward to seeing more positive growth in the guild in the coming year.

Happy Holidays!

Windows 7 Retail Launch

After three years of dealing with Vista's (partly undeserved) unpopularity, Microsoft this week launched its new operating system, Windows 7. As a way to mend Windows' reputation, Microsoft is marketing Windows 7 as an operating system with the consumer in mind. It builds on the “I'm a PC” campaign with the tagline “I'm a PC and Windows 7 was my idea.” It includes a print advertising, online efforts, and a PR campaign.

The new version of Windows offers a streamlined user interface and new features aimed at making everyday tasks easier and allowing people to get the most out of their computers.

Some of the more prominent Windows 7 features include:
Taskbar: The taskbar has been completely redesigned to help users work smarter, cut clutter, and get more done, with features such as thumbnail previews of webpages, documents and running video.
HomeGroup: Users can easily share their files and printers with other PCs running Windows 7 in their home.
Windows 7 Device Stage: This shows the status of all connected devices such as cameras and mobile phones, and makes it easier to synchronise and manage them.
Snap: Users can drag an open window to the screen's border to automatically re-size it. Two different windows can be snapped to the left and right borders for a perfect comparison.
Shake: Users can click on a window pane and shake the mouse to minimise all other open windows, then shake the pane again to restore the windows to their original sizes.
Windows Live Photo Gallery and Windows Live Movie Maker: These products are available via an optional download and offer customers free options to edit photos and videos and easily share them.
Faster on and off: A focus has been made on underlying performance, faster startup, resuming and shut down time, and enhanced power management.
Lifehacker's Complete Guide to Windows 7 covers pretty much everything you might want to know about what's new (and desirable) about Microsoft's new operating system, as well as helpful tips and addons.

The new operating system comes in three home editions: Home Premium and Ultimate editions for most new PCs, and a Starter edition for the low-cost, ultraportable netbook and nettop computers. A Professional edition has also been released for corporate upgrades, replacing Vista Business.

Further information on the Windows 7 release can be found on the Microsoft Windows 7 website: www.microsoft.com/windows7.

Wii Gets Price Drop to $199

After watching Microsoft and Sony drop the prices on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, Nintendo has decided to jump in with a price cut as well. Starting September 27th, the Wii will cost $199 in North America, a $50 drop from the previous price. Japan will be getting a slightly smaller price cut, but Europe seems to be left out of this change. Nintendo is hoping this reduction and the release of New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Fit Plus in the coming months will boost slipping sales rates.

China Bans Gold Farming

InformationWeek is reporting that the Chinese government has declared a ban on the sale of virtual goods for real currency. This move is poised to shut down a several billion yuan a year business that has been growing by leaps and bounds every year.

"The trading of virtual currency for real cash employs hundreds of thousands of people worldwide and generates between $200 million and $1 billion annually, according to a 2008 survey conducted by Richard Heeks at the University of Manchester. He estimates that between 80% and 85% of gold farmers are based in China. [...] Game companies typically forbid gold farming but committed virtual currency traders find ways around such rules. Some game companies have recognized the futility of trying to ban the practice and have built virtual commerce into their game infrastructure."

Windows 7 Limited Pre-Order Starts Today

Microsoft just laid out the Windows 7 pricing grid, and here's the information: Vista and XP users will be paying $119.99, $199.99, or $219.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate upgrade. Full retail copies will run $199.99, $299.99, or $319.99 respectively.

It's not quite that simple, though: starting today, June 26, and ending July 11 (or while supplies last) you'll be able to pre-order upgrades at much cheaper prices - $49.99 for Home Premium and $99.99 for Professional. However, pre-orders will be strictly limited in number and are expected to sell out quickly.

Pre-orders are being taken now at quite a few retailers, including Newegg and Amazon.

It's not a bad start, especially since participating manufacturers will be offering cheap and/or free upgrades to 7 on new computers sold after today with Vista as well.

Alliance Clears Veeshan's Peak! Ice Cream and Mythicals!

Unbelievable! The Alliance worked through Night Two of the Veeshan's Peak raid, and SWEPT through the zone like a killing wind. No wipes, each mob falling on the first attempt.

THREE new mythical weapons for The Clenched Fist:

Toukai with the Cudgel of Obviation,
Tulvarus with Eagle's Talon, and
Xylarius with Elemental Dominance
Grats to everyone! This was a long road that required a lot of patience and effort, and to see it pay off is a huge accomplishment. Also, thanks to our friends in Reckless Alliance, we couldn't have done it without you!

Guild First! Venril Sathir Defeated!

Last night The Clenched Fist, along with Reckless Alliance and other Alliance guest, headed into The Lair of Venril Sathir for a marathon session and exercise in frustration that yet ended in victory, providing some much sought-after quest updates. Both Toukai and Xylarius advanced on thier mythical weapons quests.

The Venril Sathir fight requires the utmost concentration and coordination of the raid force in order to be successful. In addition to multiple events that must be managed during the fight, each person must maintain their mana between 30%-60% at all times, or the raid will wipe. Also, periodically a few members will be cursed, and must not use any abilities, or the raid will wipe. The slightest error results in failure.

Despite many attempts, the raid force showed immense progress right from the start, getting Venril under 10% on several attempts. Rather than being discouraged by the failures, the raid rallied together and stuck through the entire evening. The final blow was struck with venril under 3%, with adds loose in the raid party. The surviving raid party members were able to slay the ugly lizard and finish off the adds to secure the final victory and the quest update.

Thanks to the Alliance for the victory! Next stop: Veeshan's Peak!
