Finished my nixie clock kit. Bought it on eBay, since I've always wanted one, and I enjoy electronics projects. I was raised on Heathkit, and they're gone now, alas...
This clock uses nixie tubes as the clock display. They're a really classic look, and quite fun to watch. Not too difficult a project, I was able to finish in a afternoon. The hardest part was finishing the case, which I'm not terribly proud of the finish on (I had terrible trouble with the stain, despite putting considerible effort into sanding and prepwork; I guess I just don't have the knack yet of the application). Overall, it came out pretty nice.
The tubes themselves are very rare, with the tubes, parts, and drivers well out of production. What few are left are NOS (new old stock) parts that have been hanging out in warehouses and suchlike. Large tubes are very much tresured, the larger the tube, the more valuable it is. Sets can be very pricey indeed, so I chose a smaller size kit.

Thanks!
I took it to work and put it on my desk, it's been a great conversation piece, gotten nothing but compliments on it. Quite a few of my co-workers either haven't even seen nixie tubes, or remember working with them. The stories have made it worth it for that alone.
