As you all probably know, I've gotten a new pet. She's a Senegal parrot, and was hatched on February 9th. She's very bright and assertive, and is quite the handful. Here's a few pics!

Hey David,

Great looking bird! Almost eatin' size.... Hey what's that thing on it's foot, a tumor?

Just kidding big guy. We can't wait to meet Rio when we come back for a visit in October. Think you can fatten her up by then?

<ahnold>It's not a tuhmor!</ahnold>

She's munching on a parrot treat. It's kind of a puff thing rolled in seeds and stuff. To give you an idea of scale, it's about the size of a regular marble.

Sadly, this has a tragic ending.

Rio became seriously ill September 25th. After an inconclusive visit at the local vet, she collpased and I was forced to rush her to an emergency avian vet down in Los Angeles. I got there and the x-rays and bloodwork showed liver and kidney failure and she was in a coma. She had to be euthanized.

The subsequent necropsy showed massive organ failure caused by an unspecified bacterial infection. However, it was not an infection that would be a threat to humans, or to another bird. The infection had been going on for a while, and it would appear that by the time she was showing any symptoms at all, it was already too late.

She was just over four years old. Far too young. I'll really miss her.
