Apocalypse Postponed – You Still have to Pay Your Mortgage Jan 1st |
Yup, bad news, your bills are still due.
The Mayans and their predecessors, the Olmec, figured out the concept of zero hundreds of years before other parts of the world including the Mediterranean and Europe. But the confusion about the end of the world occurred because the same marker used to indicate zero also could be used for 13.
The Mayan long-count calendar has names for certain chunks of time. A baktun is a unit of time that represents close to 400 years. On Friday, there will have been 13 baktuns passed since the Mayan "year zero." The baktun is the largest chunk of time depicted on most long-count calendars, but there are also pictuns, or 20 baktuns.
Mayanist Michael Coe may be responsible for starting the fear surrounding the end-of-the-world scenario in the 1960s, before the great revolution in Mayan studies. Coe speculated as to how the Mayan people might have envisioned the end of 13 baktuns:
"This, our present universe, would be annihilated when the great cycles of the long-count reached completion."
In these enlightened days, of course, no one believes a word of it. |

Sony will cut about 10,000 jobs, which equates to about six percent of its global workforce, by the end of the year. The move comes after the Tokyo-based electronics firm more than doubled its loss forecast on April 5 to $2.9 billion, and the recent hiring of a new CEO, Kazuo Hirai, on April 1. Hirai looks to downsize Sony and pivot the company in a new direction to get out of the red for the first time in four years. The company will reportedly sell off its chemical products division, cutting about 3,000 workers in the process, and also make cuts within its small and midsize LCD operations. Sony did not say if it would cut these jobs in Japan, abroad, or both. |

Merry Christmas from the Clenched Fist! |
I wanted to take this opportunity to wish the Guild, as well as our guests and visitors, the very best of times during this holiday season.
It's been a very... challenging year. Everyone has experienced a lot of trials and difficulties in our lives, but we made it through largely intact (perhaps losing an internal organ or two along the way). Nevertheless, there is much to look back upon favorably.
This year marks another successful production run of the Laughlin Cookie Factory, for which we're very grateful.
Also, another Fain Faire with a big turnout from the Clenched Fist, providing one of those rare opportunities for the Guild to meet in person, some for the first time ever. Good times...
I'm looking forward to another year with the Clenched Fist, to continue to add members to the guild and build our extended family. I hope everyone is enjoying their holiday time, hopefully with family and friends and fun.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

Sony Fail Whale, Part III?! SonyPictures.com Falls |
What do you tell a giant multinational media conglomerate with two black eyes? Nothing, you told 'em twice!
Apparently Lulz Security has broken into SonyPictures.com, where it claims to have stolen the personal information of over 1,000,000 users - all stored (disgracefully) in plain text format. Lulz claims the heist was performed with a simple SQL injection - just like we saw the last time around. A portion of the group's exploit is posted online in a RAR file, which contains over 50,000 email / password combos of unfortunate users. In addition to user information, the group has blurted out over 20,000 Sony music coupons, and the admin database (including email addresses and passwords) for BMG Belgium employees.
Public statement from Lulz Security follows after the break... |

Sony Fail Whale, Part II... and Counting. |
Slashdot reports:
As Sony struggles to restore the Playstation Network we receive news today of another breach, this time at Sony Ericsson in Canada. Sony Corp. spokesman Atsuo Omagari said Wednesday that names, email and encrypted passwords may have been stolen from the Sony Ericsson Canada website, but no credit card information was taken.
According to a report on The Hacker News, a hacker group called "LulzSec" said it used an SQL Injection attack to grab information behind two sites associated with Sony Music Entertainment Japan.
In addition to a distributed denial-of-service attack the group Anonymous launched on Sony in early April and the unconfirmed Sony Music Japan and Sony Ericsson hacks, there have been attacks on PSN, SOE, Sony Music Greece, Sony Music Indonesia, Sony's Japanese ISP subsidiary So-net Entertainment, and Sony Thailand's site. |

Northrop Grumman Firebird Is Pilot Optional |
Slashdot reports:
Although the use of unmanned aerial vehicles such as Global Hawk and Raven for military information gathering has increased sharply in the last decade due to the maturation and miniaturization of enabling technologies, conventional piloted aircraft can still be a better option depending on the mission at hand. Northrop Grumman has unveiled a new intelligence gathering aircraft called the Firebird that falls into the category of an Optionally Piloted Vehicle with its ability to be flown robotically or with a human pilot on board. |

Merry Christmas from The Clenched Fist! |
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the server / All things "Working As Intended," activity hardly a murmur. / The backpacks were hung by the dragon's lair with care, / In hopes that PHAT LEWTS soon would be there...
As the year nears its end, The Clenched Fist Guild would like to wish its members and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Although the past year has had its ups and downs, we've seen a lot of great activity in the Guild, with the addition of new members, as well as the return of old friends. We've also had great experiences with our Alliance partners, with many new encounters defeated and countless epics and shard armor sets completed.
Also, the Guild has reached a new milestone in its own progress, largely thanks to the effort of many Heritage Quest seekers and one obsessive Ranger. In a very short amount of time, the Guild has risen to Level 70, an impressive accomplishment given our very small size.
I hope everyone enjoys their holidays, and I look forward to seeing more positive growth in the guild in the coming year.
Happy Holidays!

Alliance Clears Veeshan's Peak! Ice Cream and Mythicals! |
Unbelievable! The Alliance worked through Night Two of the Veeshan's Peak raid, and SWEPT through the zone like a killing wind. No wipes, each mob falling on the first attempt.
THREE new mythical weapons for The Clenched Fist:
Grats to everyone! This was a long road that required a lot of patience and effort, and to see it pay off is a huge accomplishment. Also, thanks to our friends in Reckless Alliance, we couldn't have done it without you! |
