PlayStation Poorhouse
The PS3 has cost the Japanese electronics giant $3.3 billion since its launch in late 2006 because of "strategic pricing" under which it sells the console at a loss, according to the annual report filed by Sony (NYSE: SNE) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. Under this scheme, the system is sold to consumers at a loss, though the idea is that software sales and the fruits of being an eventual market leader would counteract these early-term losses.
"Even if the platform is ultimately successful, it may take longer than expected to recoup the investment, resulting in a negative impact on Sony’s profitability," the report said.
Sony stated in the annual 20-F regulatory filing that the launch of the PS3 drove game segment losses of $2.15 billion for FY07, ended March 31, 2007 (PS3 had been on the market for only about five months at that point). FY08, ended March 31 this year, saw losses of $1.15 billion in the game segment.
It's too soon to tell how the PS3's highly anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 will impact June sales.
The year may not even be at the halfway mark, but Sony's luck will have to change if 2008 will end up the year of the PS3. It will now have to rely on its cast of anticipated holiday hits, such as Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, and the launch of Home, its oft-delayed virtual online community, to drive sales.

Gary Gygax, 'Father of D&D,' Dies at 69
Gary Gygax, one of the co-creators of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, according to Stephen Chenault, CEO of Troll Lord Games. Gygax designed the original D&D game with Dave Arneson in 1974.
Gygax went well beyond the role of game developer and became an icon to gamers, appearing as himself in episodes of Futurama ("Anthology of Interest I") and the G4TV show Code Monkeys and participating in discussions on roleplaying-related message boards.
Gygax had been in poor health for some time, according to his wife Gail. Chenault says he will publish more information, including funeral arrangements, on the Troll Lord message board as it becomes available.

Roster Master Developer Response to the RoK EQ2 Players Release
As you are probably aware by now, on November 12th, 2007, the SOE Web Platform team released a revised version of the EQ2Players website. Titled "EQ2Players RoK Release (3.4)", this new version brought new features, some bugfixes, but also introduced new problems, failed to address several long-standing problems (some of which have existed since the game's introduction in 2004, some three years ago), as well as removed existing features. This is similar to the situation that was created by changes to EQ2Players on November 14th, 2006, on the occasion of the Echoes of Faydwer (EoF) release.
These changes had a marked impact on the Roster Master project (due to missing data and inconsistently formatted feeds that were the result of the changes), but more so had a marked impact on the community. Whether users of Roster Master or just customers of SOE, players were left with unresolved problems ranging from being unable to use the data, to data not being updated consistently or correctly, to the fee-based Advanced Services not working as advertised or being able to access services that were paid for, all the way up to reoccurring problems with billing for those services.
Fortunately, the Roster Master project had been able to recover partially from these changes through the efforts of Dark Grue (RM4DF dev) and Lantis (RMSA dev). By putting our heads together along with other members of the community, the Roster Master Project community managed, once more, to find ways to work around the data format problem, but at the cost of reduced functionality.
"Any Devs Wanna Explain Test->Live Transfers" on the EverQuest II Forums is a post pointing the way to this forum post and this forum post that allege that an entire guild has been transferred from a test server, where gaining levels and items is easier, to a live EverQuest II server in a move SOE has stated was not allowable to avoid harming game balance. The posts not only allege that a game master was involved in the account transfers, but that a GM had previously been a member of that guild and helped it gain loot along the way.
Opinions expressed in the forums range from outrage from those who feel cheated to understanding from those who feel this guild is simply being rewarded for being particularly helpful in testing things. SOE has yet to be heard from on this topic.

We Still Love Bees!
REDMOND, Wash. — Sept. 24, 2007 — Starting tonight "Halo 3," the final chapter of Microsoft Corp.'s epic video game trilogy, finally goes on sale around the world. By the end of the week, fans in 37 countries will be playing the game Wired magazine recently called "a cultural touchstone, a Star Wars for the thumb stick generation."
In the United States, more than 10,000 retailers across the country are opening their doors at midnight tonight solely to sell copies of the game and accompanying Xbox 360 consoles and accessories. With nary a pirate, a spider or a wand in sight, day-one sales of the highly anticipated video game are expected to shatter entertainment sales records and top the biggest entertainment launches of all time.
